National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame Nominating Committee Rules and Regulations
- Authorization
By authorization of the Board of Directors of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and the National Nominating Committee is authorized to hold an election every year for the purpose of electing members to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame from the ranks of sports. - Electors
The Nominating Committee of thirty-two members shall consist of sportswriters, historians, and former inductees of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. - Eligible Candidates
Candidates to be eligible must meet the following requirements.- A nominee must have either parent born of Italian heritage.
- A nominee must have been an active participant in their sport, either professional or amateur, in the United States of America.
- A nominee must have made an outstanding contribution to a given sport over a period of years and has shown good sportsmanship and character together with excellent achievements in his or her career.
- The Screening Committee will review a minimum time period for Induction consideration after reviewing nomineesâ careers in sports with regard to their competition in amateur and professional athletics.
- Method of Election
- Screening Committee - A Screening Committee consisting of six members who are appointed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the purpose of reviewing names for nomination consideration. The Screening Committee shall consist of a Chairman, co-Chairman, and four members.
- Duties of the Screening Committee - The screening of eligible candidates will be prepared by ballot listing names in alphabetical order by sport. The list will be prepared at an annual meeting of the Nominating Committee.
- An Elector will vote for ten candidates on the first ballot and proceeding vote for a maximum of five. The co-Chairman shall tabulate the votes.
- Voting
Voting shall be based upon the nominees record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, or contribution to their individual sport. - Veterans Selection
- A nominee must have either parent born of Italian heritage.
- A nominee must be retired from a given sport for a minimum of thirty-five years.
- An Elector will vote for ten candidates on the first ballot and proceeding to vote for a maximum of two. The co-Chairman shall tabulate the votes.
- Time of Election
The Screening Committee of the NIASHF shall prepare, date, and mail ballots to each elector each year. The Electors shall sign and return the completed ballot within twenty days. The Chairman of the Screening Committee shall then tabulate the vote. - Certification of Election to the NIASHF
The results of the election shall be final, subject to approval of the Board of Directors of the NIASHF and the announced to the general public. - Rules for Election to the NIASHF
- Name - The committee shall be known as the Nominating Committee of the NIASHF.
- Number - The committee shall consist of seven Screening Committee members and eleven Nominating Committee members. Membership of this committee shall be selected from the sports, media, historians, and former players and coaches.
- Methods of Appointment - The committee shall be appointed by the Board of Directors of the NIASHF.
- Terms - The terms of each appointment is for three years and expires on December 31st of each year in which the appointment expires, whichever is earliest, at which time the Board of Directors shall review the existing committee,
- Duties - The committee shall consider all eligible candidates and hold an election each year. It shall have such further duties as may be assigned to it from the time by the Board of Directors.
- No member of the committee can be elected to the NIASHF while he or she is a member of the Committee.
- Numbers to be Elected - The committee is authorized to elect inductees each year from the modern division and pioneer division.
- Time and Place of Election - Elections shall be held at such time and place as the Chairman of the NIASHF may designate.
- Voting - A quorum of members is required for an election. An affirmative vote of at least seventy-five percent of the members of the committee present at the election shall be necessary for the election of a candidate to membership in the NIASHF. Proxy votes are permitted electronically and by mail only.
- Minutes
The committee shall keep minutes of its meeting, one copy of which is to be placed on file at the NIASHF. - Rules
The committee shall make such further rules as it may wish for the conduct of its business. - Automatic Election
No automatic election will be allowed for an athlete that has performed a special feat such as pitching a no-hitter, etc. - Amendments
The Board of Directors of the NIASHF reserves the right to revoke, alter, or amend these rules at anytime.
